“Attending medical school at St. Matthew’s University gave me the confidence to step out of my comfort zone, meet many new people and start conversations along the way about my future as a yearning dermatologist. Along with the tools SMUSOM gave me in class and studying hard, I sought out every opportunity to volunteer along the way to make myself a stronger candidate. In the end, I knew I would only regret the chances I didn’t take since obtaining a residency in dermatology as an IMG did not come from staying in my comfort zone.”

Dr. Lara (Cumberland) Butler currently maintains a teaching schedule at the Harvard Medical School, Department of Dermatology, lecturing on complex reconstruction techniques following Mohs surgery. A diplomate of the American Academy of Dermatology, she is a fellow of the American College of Mohs Surgery and American Society of Dermatologic Surgery. In addition to working as a researcher at the Johns Hopkins and Mount Sinai Hospitals, she has been published extensively in leading medical journals on topics ranging from cosmetic surgery innovations to skin cancer and scar revision surgery.

Dr. Butler (SMUSOM ‘09) served as an Intern in Internal Medicine for a year before completing a residency in Dermatology from 2011-2014 at Geisinger Medical Center, serving as Chief Resident in 2014. She completed a fellowship in Procedural Dermatology at Harvard University’s Lahey Clinic. Dr. Butler is currently affiliated with the South Shore Skin Center in Norwell and Plymouth, Massachusetts.
