Biography:

Dr. Salter joined St. Matthew’s University School of Medicine in 2007 as the Chief of the Department of Surgery, a position that he still holds.  In 2014, Dr. Salter was named the Dean of Clinical Sciences.

A graduate of University of Toronto magna cum laude, he spent two years in family practice in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia before returning to University of Toronto for a fellowship in General Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Vascular Surgery and Cardiac Surgery. Following his fellowship he spent two years doing basic cardiac research at Duke University. Dr. Salter has taught medical students from 8 medical schools and in 3 countries, and his teaching ability has been widely acknowledged by those with whom he has worked.

He reached the academic rank of full professor with tenure. Dr. Salter has done more than 30 heart transplants. He ran a surgical intensive care unit for 10 years, a research lab, dealt with trauma and a wide spectrum of cardiac and vascular surgery. He was the director of the Clinical Curriculum at MCV for 10 years.
