Faculty Member Receives Robert Hamaty Heart of the Community Award

Congratulations to Dr. T.K. Sukumar on this meaningful recognition.

St. Matthew’s University (SMU) is proud to share that T.K. Sukumar, MD, MBBS, has been honored with the 2025 Robert Hamaty Heart of the Community Award for his remarkable contributions to the Cayman Islands community. The Robert Hamaty Heart of the Community Award is an annual award to commemorate Mr. Hamaty’s memory and commitment to the Cayman Heart Fund. 

This year, the award recognizes and celebrates Dr. Sukumar’s dedication to teaching American Heart Association (AHA) courses, providing CPR training and supporting the Cayman Heart Foundation (CHF).

Dr. Sukumar has extensive experience working as an educator, researcher, consultant, microbiologist and immunologist. At St. Matthew’s University School of Medicine, he is the Associate Professor of Medical Microbiology & Immunology and Coordinator of the Basic Life Support Training Centre (AHA). Additionally, he has more than a decade of clinical training and experience as a physician.

Along with his medical practice and education experience, Dr. Sukumar has received extensive recognition as an international author and presenter. Additionally, his research has been published in the Indian Journal of Microbiology Research; Indian Journal of Allergy Asthma and Immunology; International Journal of Health and Allied Sciences; and the International Journal of Recent Trends in Science and Technology.

We would like to sincerely thank Dr. Sukumar for his hard work and commitment to care, and for bringing this honor to the St. Matthew’s University community.

SMU has hosted CPR training programs on Grand Cayman for more than a decade. This recognition is not only a tribute to Dr. Sukumar’s leadership, but is also a reflection of the hard work and commitment of all our certified instructors who have continually contributed to improving community health and emergency preparedness.
