How to Apply to Medical School: A Step-by-Step Guide

Explore academic prerequisites, MCAT requirements, interview guidance and more tips for MD program admissions success.

Deciding to pursue success in a comprehensive MD program is an exciting choice, but figuring out how to apply to medical school can sometimes feel overwhelming. With many requirements, both academic and individual, the medical school application process is best approached with a clear understanding of expectations.

To support your efforts, this guide will walk you through the steps for applying to medical schools – from prerequisites to admissions interview preparation. It will also help you understand your options, including international pathways like the one provided by St. Matthew’s  University School of Medicine (SMUSOM).

Understanding the Medical School Application Process

The medical school application process typically spans an extended period, including the time it takes to gather all required documentation and then have the admissions committee evaluate your academic ability (GPA/MCAT), your commitment to medicine (clinical experience) and your personal qualities (via the essay and letters of recommendation). It is always a good idea to get started early, to help ensure you can start in the semester of your choice. Notably, SMUSOM offers start dates in January, May and September.

Most U.S. MD programs use the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS), while DO programs use the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Application Service (AACOMAS), to collect, verify and transmit your application data and MCAT scores to selected schools. When applying to medical school at St. Matthew’s University, applicants can submit a verified copy of their application from either AMCAS or AACOMAS, or from either the Texas Medical & Dental Schools Application Service (TMDSAS) or Ontario Medical School Application Service (OMSAS).

Pre-Application Requirements for Medical School

Before you submit your complete application, you must ensure you meet the medical school requirements for MD program acceptance. These may vary slightly by institution, but are largely similar. Importantly, missing prerequisites or support documents can hinder your chances of admissions success.

Complete Prerequisites for Medical School

Most medical schools expect applicants to successfully complete specific coursework, including:

  • General Biology
  • General Chemistry
  • Organic Chemistry
  • English

Prepare for the MCAT Exam

The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is a 7.5-hour exam that evaluates your knowledge of biological sciences, chemistry and psychology, along with your critical thinking, problem-solving and scientific reasoning skills. In order to achieve success, plan to dedicate at least 3-4 months of intensive study using official AAMC resources and full-length practice tests. Be sure to focus on weak areas through targeted revisions.

Importantly, only U.S. students who apply to the SMUSOM MD program are required to take the MCAT and submit their scores, although it is recommended that Canadian and other international students do so as well. Any MD applicant who has taken the MCAT must submit their scores.

Gain Clinical and Extracurricular Experience

Admissions committees want to see proof of your passion for medicine and that you understand the realities of healthcare. In order to accumulate experience that meets this application need, you can shadow physicians, volunteer at hospitals, gain research experience and/or work as an EMT. These experiences show commitment and help enhance your med school application.

Write a Strong Personal Statement

Your personal statement is your firsthand narrative – it’s one of the most useful ways to have your application highlight your interest in medicine, personal commitment, and relevant experiences that are not captured in a transcript or resume. Avoid cliches when writing your statement but strive to show off your passion and ability. Explain your motivations for pursuing a career in medicine, highlight key accomplishments and demonstrate your resilience.

Secure Letters of Recommendation

Most schools require multiple letters of recommendation, from science professors, academic advisors and/or medical supervisors. At St. Matthews University, we require at least two letters of recommendation in a complete MD program application. For recent graduates, it is advisable that one letter come from a professional acquaintance and the other from an academic contact.

Gather Transcripts and Application Support Documents

Ensure all documents and transcripts are accurate and requested early. Missing documentation can cause delays or invalidate your med school application.

Importantly, the SMUSOM admissions team will accept student-issued versions of your transcripts as part of the initial application. This accelerates the evaluation process and gets you a decision sooner. However, official transcripts will be required before you receive official acceptance.

Medical School Application Timelines

In the U.S., the primary med school application window via AMCAS/AACOMAS opens in early May, with the targeted start date being in September. However, because we offer three start dates per year, SMUSOM operates a rolling admissions process and future students can apply at any time throughout the year.

Preparing for Medical School Interviews

Interviews are the final major hurdle in your application process. Those chosen for an admissions interview with SMUSOM will have the option of participating in a live or virtual conversation, although video chats are the standard.

To best prepare, practice answering common questions like “why do you want to be a doctor,” “what sparked your passion for medicine” and “why are you interested in joining St. Matthew’s University School of Medicine.” You can also research other questions online and practice structured responses. For additional guidance, see this resource on medical school interview tips.

How Much Does It Cost to Apply to Medical School?

The cost of applying to medical school can vary widely, with some applicants paying $3,000+ USD when applying to multiple schools in the United States.

Beneficially however, SMUSOM does not require applicants to pay an MD program application fee. Additionally, through our shared application, aspiring physicians can apply to our fellow GUS Medical Schools – Saba University School of Medicine and Medical University of the Americas – with a single application, at no cost to the applicant.

How to Choose the Right Medical School?

When choosing the right school, there are multiple elements to consider, including location, cost, curriculum, clinical rotation opportunities, support services, residency placement rates and USMLE first-time pass rates. Be sure to carefully consider what you’re looking for in a school and what elements will help you achieve academic, personal and career success as a medical doctor.
