“I chose St. Matthew’s University School of Medicine (SMUSOM) because it offered a strong blend of quality education, an excellent lifestyle and impressively high residency match rates. I attended from 2008 to 2012, after unsuccessful attempts to gain admission in the U.S., and my time there exceeded every expectation. I learned from outstanding instructors, built lifelong friendships and was given a genuine opportunity to pursue my dream of becoming a doctor, backed by real resources including student tutors, an open-door policy with accomplished professors and hands-on lab experience.

That preparation paid off. I passed all my board exams on the first try, competed successfully with U.S. and Canadian medical students for residency positions and completed clinical rotations at top-notch facilities like the Cleveland Clinic alongside other U.S. medical students. And while studying was always the priority on Grand Cayman, we made time to enjoy the island’s world-renowned beaches, diving, boating, food and culture, as well as give back by hosting free health fairs, volunteering at the local hospital and taking part in community events.

I received over 15 residency interviews and matched into my first choice, a three-year family medicine residency at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Chicago. That launched my career as a primary care physician, and I later transitioned into more acute care during the COVID-19 pandemic, working on the front lines to diagnose and treat patients through one of the most difficult periods in recent history.

Along the way, I also started my own aesthetic medicine practice, gaining expertise in procedures like Botox and dermal fillers.

Since then, I’ve completed a three-year MBA program through Washington State University and, more recently, an AI in Healthcare course through Harvard, all while continuing to practice clinically full-time. Today, I consult for newly opening urgent cares and medical practices, guiding them through launch and operations, as well as for AI healthcare startups and clinics developing platforms and devices that improve patient care. Much of that work centers on applying AI where it actually helps: supporting clinical decision-making, streamlining processes and reducing physician burnout.

I’m also working toward opening my own direct primary care and concierge practice. Having practiced in the Seattle area for over 10 years now, I remain proud of how SMUSOM prepared me to become the physician I am today.

I share more of my journey on The White Coat Network Podcast in Episode 15. Listen on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.”
