Avila University Pathway Agreement

St. Matthew’s University School of Medicine and Avila University have established a pathway that supports Avila graduates entering the field of medicine.

SMUSOM and Avila University: Strengthening Med School Pathways for Future Doctors

St. Matthew’s University School of Medicine (SMUSOM) and Avila University have joined forces in an exciting partnership to enhance medical education and train the next generation of healthcare leaders. The collaboration offers graduates of Avila University Bachelor of Science degree programs the opportunity to gain direct entry into SMUSOM’s 4-year Doctor of Medicine (MD) program. This collaboration not only streamlines the admissions process but also provides a seamless transition from undergraduate to medical education.

Avila University Bachelor of Science graduates, who have achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or equivalent, are considered pre-qualified for study at SMUSOM. Additionally, Avila graduates who desire to take this pathway will be granted a guaranteed partner scholarship of $10,000 USD, along with eligibility for other qualifying scholarships and grants that greatly enhance the accessibility of a quality MD education.

“Avila strives to provide Education Without Limits to its students, and this unique partnership is another way we are doing just that,” said Jim Burkee, PhD, President of Avila University. “This partnership will provide unparalleled opportunities for our students, and we could not be more pleased to offer this program. We believe that international learning opportunities provide our students with unique perspectives and educational experiences that may not otherwise be presented in traditional program opportunities.”

Gerald Wargo, Executive Vice President of Marketing and Enrollment at GUS Medical and Veterinary Schools (of which SMUSOM is a member institution), also expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, sharing: “We are proud to collaborate with Avila University. This partnership provides talented students with the opportunity to study medicine in the Caribbean and return to the U.S. or Canada for clinical training. We believe that partnerships of this nature will advance health care excellence globally.”

St. Matthew’s University School of Medicine is located on the picturesque, modern, and safe island of Grand Cayman (part of the Cayman Islands). While on campus during the first half of medical school (Basic Sciences), students receive an excellent education and meaningful hands-on training, all while also having access to the exciting activities and experiences unique to the Caribbean. For students who dream of becoming a practicing doctor and who love new life experiences, it’s an opportunity you won’t want to miss!
